The National IDeA Symposium of Biomedical Research Excellence held its biennial conference in Washington, DC on June 16-18, 2014. During this conference the Network of IDeA-funded Core Laboratories (NICL) organized a special core track session. The following is the agenda, which contains the links to the various topics and their presenters.

1:30– 2:30 Plenary Speaker, Standards in Life Science Research Cores: Championing Best Practices that enable tools and technologies supporting biomedical research excellence. Dr. Len Freedman, President of the Global Biological Standards Institute™.
2:30 – 3:20 Bioinformatics Track: Education, Infrastructure and Research. This session will highlight bioinformatics education modules developed by the Dartmouth team; explore the must have for computing and data infrastructure, including cloud-based databases; and give an overview of current initiatives involving cross-institutional, and cross-core collaborations. 1:30 – 2:55 Managing a Successful Core: Developing business models that best fit your research environment, and how to set goals for sustainability. This session will cover chargeback and compliance as well as realistic goals depending on technology– not one size fits all. Presenters: Jeff Caplan PhD, DE-INBRE, Delaware Biotechnology Institute, and Carol Barone, HT(ASCP)BASS, DE-COBRE, Nemours Biomedical Research, Valerie Scott PhD, ME-INBRE, The Jackson Laboratory Cancer Center.
3:00 – 4:00 Tracking Metrics: the ABC’s of reporting. This session will focus on best practices for core activity reporting and will demonstrate how to show the impact of cores on INBRE/COBRE successes. From sample processing to publications and grants applications, a discussion of LIMS available for Cores will follow. Presenters: Tim Hunter, Vermont Genetics Network at the University of Vermont, Paula Turpen PhD, University of Nebraska Medical Center, Cynthia Anderson PhD, SD-INBRE, Black Hills State University.
4:15 – 5:30 The Cores at the Heart of Biomedical Research Excellence: Implementing new technologies (instruments and bioinformatics), sun setting old ones, the dawn of inter institutional core collaboration, and strategies for optimal utilization of your core. Presenters: Bryon Grove PhD, University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Faye Schilkey, NM-INBRE, Sequencing and Bioinformatics Core at the National Center for Genome Resources.
